The Sleepy Jackson: The Devil was in my Yard
2006: Music Video: Co-Director / Co- Producer / Editor
A Wizard of OZ inspired vision finds Luke Steele of The Sleepy Jackson collecting language that rains from the sky and transforming it to music.
This treatment was originally inspired by a description of a short story within Kurt Vonnegut’s Breakfast of Champions, one of my favourite books.
*It was about a planet where language kept turning into pure music because the creatures there were so enchanted by sounds. Words became musical notes, setences became melodies. They were useless as conveyors of information as nobody knew or cared what the meanings of the words were anymore. So leaders in government and commerce, in order to function, had to invent new and much uglier vocabularies and sentence structures all the time, which would resist being transmuted to music. *
Vonnegut is a champion.
A squareyed production.
